Heat Pump Installation in Ypsilanti and Southeast Michigan

A cold-climate heat pump that cools in July and heats most of the winter, paired with your gas furnace or standing alone, sized correctly and installed by the owner. Free estimates, rebate paperwork handled.

Five years ago we would have steered most Southeast Michigan homeowners away from a heat pump as a primary heat source. The equipment then lost most of its capacity below 25 degrees, and a Washtenaw County winter spends a lot of nights below that. The equipment now is different. Cold-climate heat pumps with inverter-driven compressors deliver useful heat at zero and below, and when paired with an existing gas furnace in a dual-fuel arrangement they handle the mild two-thirds of the heating season cheaply and let the furnace take over on the polar vortex nights. Add DTE Energy rebates and the federal 25C tax credit, and a heat pump is now the right answer for a lot of homes that are due for a new air conditioner anyway. Temprasure installs them, and we are honest about when they fit and when they do not.

The most common installation we do is dual-fuel. Your central air is 15 years old and due for replacement, your gas furnace is sound, and instead of a new condenser we install a cold-climate heat pump outdoors with a matched coil on the furnace. In summer it cools like a high-efficiency air conditioner. In fall and spring and on 30-to-45-degree winter days it heats the house on electricity at a cost that beats DTE gas rates for most of that range. Below a balance point we set based on the equipment's capacity curve and current utility rates, the furnace takes over. The homeowner gets a new AC that also cuts the gas bill, and the furnace lasts longer because it runs fewer hours.

Standalone installations, where the heat pump is the only heat source with electric strips or a hydronic coil for backup, make sense in specific cases: homes without a gas main, which includes rural pockets of Augusta, York, Sumpter and Salem townships running on propane, houses where the furnace is also at the end of its life and the owner wants off gas entirely, and additions or accessory dwellings. We size those systems to carry the house at the Ann Arbor design temperature, roughly zero degrees, with the backup sized for the handful of nights that go below it. We do not install heat pumps that will lean on strip heat for a quarter of the winter, because that defeats the purpose.

Sizing and airflow are where heat pump installs succeed or fail. A heat pump delivers supply air at 90 to 105 degrees rather than the 120-plus of a gas furnace, so the house needs more airflow for the same comfort, and the ductwork in 1950s to 1970s ranches and colonials was often built for a furnace with a single hallway return. We run a Manual J on every installation, measure static pressure on the existing ducts, and tell you if a return needs to be added or a trunk resized before the system goes in. We install R-454B equipment to the manufacturer's spec, with a new line set where the old one is undersized or contaminated, a deep vacuum, a weighed-in charge, and a thermostat that actually understands dual-fuel staging and outdoor temperature.

Estimates are free and come with no pressure. We will tell you plainly if your house is a better candidate for a conventional AC replacement, and we will tell you if a heat pump is the better long-term buy. The written quote is one flat number covering equipment, coil, materials, labor, permit, haul-away and commissioning. We identify which equipment tiers qualify for DTE rebates and the 25C credit and provide the AHRI certificate and invoice detail to claim them. If you are comparing our quote against another installer's, bring it; we will give you an honest read on the sizing and the scope.

Signs it is time to call

Your central air is due for replacement

If the condenser is 15-plus years old or on R-22, the incremental cost of a cold-climate heat pump over a new AC is often modest after rebates, and it cuts the gas bill for most of the winter.

Your gas furnace is healthy

A sound furnace is the ideal partner for a dual-fuel heat pump. The heat pump takes the mild weather, the furnace takes the cold snaps, and the furnace lasts longer running fewer hours.

No natural gas at the house

Propane and electric-resistance homes in the rural townships pay the most for heat. A cold-climate heat pump is often the biggest heating bill reduction available to them.

You want to use less gas

Whether for cost or for your own reasons, a heat pump shifts most of the heating season to electricity, and DTE's electric rates make that worthwhile for much of the winter.

An addition or finished space without ductwork capacity

A new wing or a converted space that the existing furnace cannot reach well is a case for a dedicated ducted heat pump sized for that area.

You want the rebates and tax credit

DTE Energy rebates and the federal 25C credit both apply to qualifying heat pumps, and the combined incentive can be substantial. The equipment has to meet specific efficiency tiers, which we help you navigate.

Uneven summer cooling and winter heating

A variable-speed heat pump modulates its output rather than cycling on and off, which evens out temperatures and improves humidity removal in muggy July weather.

How the visit goes

  1. Free estimate and honest fit assessment

Al walks the house, inspects the furnace, ductwork, line set and electrical panel, runs a Manual J, and tells you whether a dual-fuel, standalone or conventional AC replacement makes the most sense for your house.

  2. Sized options in writing

Two or three equipment options with capacity curves at Michigan design temperatures, each as one flat price, with notes on which qualify for DTE rebates and the 25C credit.

  3. Ductwork and electrical review

Static pressure measured, returns evaluated, panel capacity and breaker sizing confirmed against the new nameplate. Anything that needs correction goes on the quote before install day.

  4. Permit and installation

Mechanical permit pulled, old equipment recovered and removed, new coil and outdoor unit set, line set installed or verified, deep vacuum and weighed-in R-454B charge, condensate trapped with a float switch, riser stand for snow clearance.

  5. Commissioning and staging

Airflow set, refrigerant charge verified in the correct mode, defrost cycle observed, backup heat and dual-fuel balance point configured on the thermostat, every stage tested.

  6. Inspection, registration and rebate paperwork

We meet the inspector, register the equipment in your name for the full parts warranty, and hand you the AHRI certificate and documentation for the DTE rebate and the 25C credit.

How pricing works

Heat pump estimates are free, in person, and carry no obligation. The quote is one flat number that covers the equipment, coil or air handler, line set, materials, labor, permit, removal of the old equipment and commissioning. What you approve is what you pay, and anything unexpected on install day is ours to absorb.

A dual-fuel installation onto a healthy furnace is the most economical path and often costs only modestly more than a conventional high-efficiency AC replacement, with the heat pump then cutting gas usage for most of the winter. Standalone systems with an air handler and backup strips cost more up front because they replace both the heating and cooling equipment. Cold-climate, variable-speed equipment sits above basic single-stage heat pumps in price and well above them in winter performance, and we explain the difference in terms of how many days each will carry the house before the backup runs.

DTE Energy offers rebates on qualifying heat pumps, and the federal 25C tax credit applies to equipment meeting the current efficiency tiers. The combined incentive can meaningfully change the comparison against a conventional AC, so we identify which options qualify, show you the net numbers, and provide the AHRI certificate and invoice detail needed to claim both. If you are holding another company's quote, we will give you a straight read on it.

On June 24 around 3:00 p.m., our A/C stopped working. I called several A/C repair companies and they all told me that it would take from several days to a few weeks to come out. Then I ran across Temprasure. I spoke to Al, and he came out the same day and diagnosed my 26-year-old A/C unit. The bad news is that it could not be repaired. The good news is that I purchased a new A/C unit and his team installed the new unit with no issues. Everything Al said about the installation experience actually occurred as he stated, from the delivery date of the unit to the time it took to install it. Not to mention the prices were more than reasonable.

Al was great! I had no A/C on the hottest day of the year and I was able to diagnose it to a failed capacitor. I was calling for the part and no one had stock. I spoke with Al and he was able to help me within an hour — came out, installed and rolling same day. Al is a great guy, highly recommend.

Al and his team are great. Our furnace stopped working on New Year's Eve. I called 10 HVAC shops and no one would come out except Al. He helped determine our problem and within a week I had a new furnace that was covered by my home insurance. I had a few problems post-install and the Temprasure team came over immediately on the weekend to fix it. Great company. Highly recommend!!

Questions we hear most

Does a heat pump actually work in a Michigan winter?

A modern cold-climate heat pump does. Inverter-driven units maintain useful capacity down to zero and below. The older, single-stage heat pumps that gave the technology a bad name here lost most of their output below 25 degrees. We install cold-climate equipment and size it to the Ann Arbor design temperature, and in a dual-fuel setup the furnace covers the coldest nights anyway.

What is dual-fuel and why do you recommend it?

A heat pump outdoors paired with your existing gas furnace indoors. The heat pump heats on electricity when it is cheaper and more efficient, typically above a balance point in the 25-to-35-degree range, and the furnace takes over below that. It is the best fit for most homes in our area that already have a sound furnace and need a new air conditioner.

What rebates and tax credits apply to a heat pump?

DTE Energy offers rebates on qualifying heat pumps, and the federal 25C tax credit covers a percentage of the cost up to a cap for equipment meeting the current efficiency tiers. We identify which of your options qualify and give you the AHRI certificate and invoice detail to claim them. Amounts change year to year, so we confirm current figures at the estimate.

Will my existing ductwork work with a heat pump?

Often, with checks. Heat pump supply air is cooler than furnace air, so the system needs adequate airflow, and 1950s-to-70s homes with a single hallway return may need a return added. We measure static pressure during the estimate and tell you exactly what, if anything, the ducts need.

What refrigerant does a new heat pump use?

R-454B, as of 2025, replacing R-410A. It is a lower global warming potential refrigerant and mildly flammable, which affects equipment design, line set handling and leak detection. We install it to the manufacturer's spec.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

A dual-fuel install onto an existing furnace, replacing an old AC, is usually one working day. A standalone system with a new air handler and backup strips, or an install that includes duct corrections and electrical upgrades, runs one and a half to two days.

Do I need an electrical panel upgrade?

Sometimes. A dual-fuel heat pump replacing an AC usually fits the existing circuit, though we verify the breaker against the new nameplate. A standalone system with electric backup strips draws significantly more and may need a panel with available capacity. We check during the estimate and quote any electrical work up front.

Can I get a heat pump if my furnace is also old?

Yes, and there are two paths: replace the furnace at the same time and go dual-fuel with new equipment on both sides, or go standalone with an air handler and backup heat and leave gas behind. We lay out both with pricing and operating cost estimates so you can choose.

Do you pull a permit for a heat pump installation?

Always. Every municipality in our area requires a mechanical permit, and the inspection is included in the price. The permit record also matters when you sell the house.
